This is what happens when you successfully fill up the enemy bleeding meter. Try to slash the opponent as much as possible in a short period of time, and eventually you will see one of your standard hits do a MUCH higher amount of damage than normal, along with a slashing sound effect and additional amounts of blood shown on screen. To test this out, equip the Thief's default knife (or other weapon with a strong bleeding stat) and locate an enemy with a reasonable amount of health. Because successfully bleeding an enemy is dependent upon you filling up their bleed meter, the quick speed and ability to provide constant pressure on the enemy works naturally well for building the bleed meter and receiving that huge damage bonus each time the enemy is bled.

Many of the dagger in Dark Souls have a strong bleeding stats, 300 for the starting Thief class knife, for example. This is where the dagger-type weapons come into the picture. The above effects also apply to enemies in the game, and although you can't see their meter as it fills up, if you can successfully fill their "meter", your attacks will have the same effect on them.

Lastly, if your bleeding meter fills up, the final hit will cause you to take a major amount of damage before the meter resets and the process starts again (I'm not sure yet whether this qualifies as a "critical" or not). If your curse meter fills up, you will become cursed and lose half your health until you dispel the curse. If your poison meter fills up you will begin to lose healthy slowly until it's healed or you die. Should that meter fill up, you will begin to suffer the full consequences of the related effect. This bar shows your susceptibility to that particular effect.

This greatly increases the amount of damage these weapons can do during critical attacks.ĭuring the course of the game I'm sure you've noticed the various bars/meters that show up under your character signifying when you're taking hits from an enemy with bleeding, poison or cursed effects. Most weapons have a "Critical" damage raging of 100, but the daggers all tend to have a higher rating such as 130 or above.

On both occasions you will see a special animation during which you are invincible to enemy damage until the animation ends. as a dagger user, there are two ways of dealing major damage:Ī critical hit occurs whenever you parry (L2) an opponent's attack with your offhand weapon or shield and immediately counter-attack (riposte), OR by backstabbing the enemy.
